Unilateral hyperlucent lung associated with bronchial atresia mimicking Swyer-James syndrome.
Bronchial atresia is a rare pulmonary anomaly characterized by a blindly-terminating bronchus, mucoid impaction, and hyperinflation of the obstructed segment of the lung.1 Chest radiographic findings typically show mucoid impaction, segmental overinflation, and hypovascularity, although most patients do not have any respiratory symptoms.1,2 We herein present 2 cases of bronchial atresia with un...

As a rare malformation with a wide variety of clinical modes of presentation, the bronchogenic cyst remains a diagnostic challenge. We report a case with a subcarinal bronchogenic cyst and stenosis of the left main bronchus presenting as "unilateral hyperlucent lung". Hypoplasia of the ipsilateral pulmonary vascular system persisted after surgical restitution of ventilation and is most likely d...

متن کاملA case of Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome diagnosed in adulthood.
Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome (SJMS), or unilateral hyperlucent lung syndrome, is a rare disease thought to be associated with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (1). This disease was first described in 1953 by Swyer and James in a 6-year-old child who had been treated with pneumonectomy (2). MacLeod presented a unilateral hyperlucency series one year later. From this date on, the disease ...
متن کاملUnilateral hyperlucent lung: the case for investigation.
Seventeen children with unilateral hyperlucent lungs were referred for investigation. Of the 11 who had a referring diagnosis of possible Macleod's syndrome only two were shown to have post-viral bronchiolitis. Three of the 11 had conditions that required surgical treatment and a further two with brochiectasis were treated medically. To avoid confusion we suggest that Macleod's syndrome is rese...
